Most fine-pitch board-to-board parts sit close, around 4 to 6mm, because that is where most stacks live. This one is deliberately taller, and that height is the feature, not a side effect.
When the lower circuit carries tall components, a shield can, or a heatsink, a shallow connector forces you into costly board re-layouts or thinned-down parts. A 14.5mm bridge clears those parts and gives service clearance, so the inner board can use standard-height components instead of custom low-profile ones.
At 0.8mm pitch you keep a compact footprint while still carrying 40, 50, or 80 contacts in a two-row layout. That density is what lets a single plug replace several larger-pitch connectors and free board area for routing.

If your pin count is set, the choice is made for you. If you are still deciding, start from the 40-contact build and move up only when routing or future features demand it, since the receptacle does not change between them.

Each contact carries 0.5A at 50V AC/DC, enough to feed signal lines and a share of light power without splitting the link into separate power connectors. For designs that draw more, run a few extra pins in parallel rather than overloading one.
Contact resistance stays at or below 80mΩ and insulation resistance holds at 500MΩ minimum, with a 200V AC dielectric withstand. Together they mean low and predictable loss across the mating interface and a comfortable safety margin over the working voltage.
The mating surface is gold finished while the solder tails are matte tin over a nickel underplate. Gold keeps the contact interface low-resistance and corrosion stable through repeated mating cycles; tin gives you a solderable, pick-and-place-friendly tail at a sensible cost. The split finish is the reason this part performs like a premium link without the premium price of full gold through-hole.
