Power Connector

A right-angle header gets specified when the height budget runs out and the harness has to leave the board sideways. Three things then decide whether the part survives production: where the mating load goes, whether the housing takes a lead-free oven without blistering, and whether the terminals carry your current without cooking the insulation.
CONSHARE builds this 3.00 mm pitch dual-row wafer in seven sizes, 2 x 2P through 2 x 8P, on a black halogen-free PA9T body with high-conductivity copper terminals in matte tin over nickel. All seven ship on tape and reel.
On a vertical header an unmating pull runs up the pin axis into the board. Turn the header 90 degrees and that pull becomes a prying moment on the rear row of joints, spread across the full body width. Joints that pass bench testing start cracking after a few service visits. The board locks move that moment into the laminate.
Board hole is 2.41 mm if you want the lock to bite, or 3.00 mm if operators should seat the part by hand. The first suits automated insertion; the second suits hand-build and rework.
Those end fittings are metal, configured as soldering lugs as well as retention hooks. You get a chassis or ground-plane tie at each end with no extra stake or second component. On a motor drive or switched supply that path matters for ESD and common-mode noise.
Heat builds across the housing, so one terminal is rated lower at sixteen circuits than at four. The wire matters equally, because the crimp and wire usually set the limit, not the header:
Wire | 2 x 2P (4) | 2 x 3P / 2 x 4P (6, 8) | 2 x 5P (10) | 2 x 6P (12) | 2 x 7P / 2 x 8P (14, 16) |
|---|---|---|---|---|---|
AWG #16 | 12.0 A | 10.5 A | 10.0 A | 9.0 A | 8.5 A |
AWG #18 | 10.0 A | 10.0 A | 8.0 A | 8.0 A | 7.5 A |
AWG #20 | 8.0 A | 8.0 A | 7.0 A | 7.0 A | 6.5 A |
AWG #22 | 4.5 A | 4.5 A | 4.0 A | 4.0 A | 3.5 A |
AWG #24 | 4.5 A | 4.5 A | 3.5 A | 3.5 A | 3.0 A |
Derating is cumulative with ambient.
The alternative build for this footprint uses brass terminals, and at the same wire size it carries roughly 5.0 to 6.5 A per circuit where copper carries 8.5 to 12.0 A. That is 60 to 90 per cent more current in the same 3.00 mm body, and the reason is thermal: copper moves heat out of the contact interface faster, so the assembly runs cooler at a given load.
Contact resistance is 10 milliohms as supplied, 20 milliohms after environmental conditioning; design to the second. Working rating is 500 V AC or DC with 1,500 V AC withstand, which on a mains-referenced board removes the creepage slots a finer pitch would need.
Nylon 6/6 absorbs enough moisture that a bag left open over a weekend can blister in reflow. PA9T does not, so these housings go from bag to oven with no drying cycle. One less step, one less way to scrap a batch.
Because the ends carry soldering lugs and the body takes lead-free reflow temperature, this header runs as an intrusive reflow (pin-in-paste) part alongside SMT components. A board that would otherwise need a selective or wave pass for one connector loses that step.
Operating range is -40 °C to +85 °C: industrial panels, indoor supplies, instrumentation, most appliance cavities. Not a sealed enclosure beside a heatsink, not under-hood. Above 85 °C, ask for the LCP build.

Body length grows 3.00 mm per added position.
Three widths appear across the range: 24 mm for the 2 x 2P, 32 mm for 2 x 3P through 2 x 5P, 44 mm from 2 x 6P up. Feeders that only carry 24 mm tape will not run the six larger sizes.
Four and six circuits show up on RGB and RGBW LED modules, channel plus return pairs, and compact sensor pods. Eight and ten cover PLC expansion blocks and multi-axis stepper drivers, where signal, power and shield share one housing. Twelve to sixteen go to display interfaces and internal power distribution. Where two connectors would sit side by side, one larger wafer usually wins on assembly time and harness cost.
Tails are 3.2 mm. On a 1.6 mm board that leaves about 1.6 mm protruding on the solder side, where wave solder throws a full fillet without a touch-up iron. On a 2.4 mm board, common on power stages, protrusion drops to roughly 0.8 mm: the joint forms, but the fillet thins and rejections climb. Thicker boards get a longer tail on the same body.
Two hundred pieces per reel, twelve empty pockets at the leader and thirteen at the tail, cover tape peel strength held between 20 and 120 grams, sprocket pitch cumulative tolerance within 0.2 mm over ten pitches. Those numbers keep a feeder indexing. Cartons run 1,800 pieces at 2 x 2P down to 1,000 at the larger sizes, each with a lot code traceable to its plating batch.
Honest boundaries save time. Look elsewhere if your ambient exceeds 85 °C, in which case ask for the LCP build; if you need more than sixteen circuits, since 2 x 9P through 2 x 12P exist on request but two connectors often serve the layout better; or if you need a surface-mount footprint, this being a through-hole part. Sustained vibration above roughly 10 g wants a positive-latch receptacle.
Tin and nickel thickness are verified per plating lot against the 100 and 40 microinch minimums, not assumed from the bath. Housings are checked for body length and pitch on first-piece and patrol inspection, terminal retention is pull-tested, and contact resistance is sampled from finished reels rather than loose parts.
Standard sizes are held in stock. Samples ship within three working days of confirmation, production reels typically in two to three weeks. Built to order on the same body and tooling:
Tail length from 1.6 mm to 3.3 mm
Plating in bright tin, matte tin, or gold from flash to 30 microinches
Board lock length and span, or omitted entirely
Soldering lug, grounding lug, or plain retention hook
Tray packing instead of tape and reel, and any pin count from 2 x 1P to 2 x 12P
Tooling-only changes are faster than new mould inserts.
Yes, up to a standard lead-free peak, and PA9T is chosen partly so you can skip the pre-bake. Send the profile if it runs hot or long.
Only the 2 x 2P. Everything from 2 x 3P upward needs 32 mm or 44 mm.
Same body, same dimensions, roughly 40 to 45 per cent less current per circuit at the same wire size. Fine for signal, not fine for power.
Yes to cut tape, and tell us your board thickness so the sample arrives with a usable tail length. For footprint checks, send the drawing or the part you are replacing: most 3.00 mm dual-row right-angle layouts are interchangeable, but board lock hole positions are the usual exception.
